For years I was a straight ally to the Gay rights movement I was very passionate about it and would defend it to the end because people I loved were gay which made it a personal battle for me. Now having joined the gay community as a queer woman Its become only slightly more personal to me but the passion and importance is just as strong as it was when I was just a straight ally.
The point of that little anecdote is that whether or not you are part of a community you can still feel passionately for the cause and help out as much as you can to fight for it. That said I think we do ourselves a great disservice by making feminism a girls club. there are men who feel very strongly about the feminist movement more strongly than some girls in fact! there is no reason (short of personal misanthropic tendencies) to exclude men from being allies to the movement. I find it kinda backwards to be fighting for a cause but then saying only girls are aloud to fight, don’t we want the numbers on our side!? don’t we need it!?
whether or not you agree with me, I believe in feminism and I want equality and it would mean just as much to me if It was achieved by the efforts of women or both women and men.

"I used to want to save the world" : Lost Ambition
This is a little project thing I want to start called lost ambition.
Do you remember being younger and having that impossible dream of doing something big and profound or maybe you never let that dream fade? Saving the world is often a stand in line for those big and profound things we dream to achieve but some where along the way life happens and we lose that big ambition. this is for remembering a time before the weight of reality set in and brought us to our current status. It is also an exploration of that current status and what the big dreams have given way to.
If you would like to participate please start your sentence with “I used to want to save the world” and fill in your status from there.
please keep the post intact as well. I’ll start.
I used to want to save the world, Now I just try and lead by example.
Theater Wit is presenting New York performer Marcella Goheen this weekend in her touring solo show The Maria Project. First performed in 2007 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the piece is inspired by the long-held family secret that Goheen’s maternal grandmother, Maria Salazar, was murdered in 1931 by her husband. But the work isn’t only about Salazar’s violent death. It also explores the way a family secret—domestic abuse, alcoholism, abandonment—can fester over generations, slowly seeping emotional poison. Sat 8/14, 8 PM, Sun 8/15, 3 PM, Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont, 773-975-8150, theaterwit.org, $18-$35.
proceeds are going to a local battered woman’s shelter. the $35 tickets include the benefit before the show with food and drink.
Erin Vaught, a transgender woman, was rushed to the emergency room after she began coughing up blood, but once there she was ridiculed by hospital staff who called her “he-she” and “it,” and eventually denied treatment because of the “transvestite thing.”
Way to shatter folks’ preconceptions about Indiana, Ball Memorial Hospital.
